Photographing In Dim Light

I was trying the new Canon 50D today. I was especially interested to test its ability to take photographs in low light and to see the noise level of the photograph in relatively dim lighting conditions. The photo below was taken at ISO12,500. As you can see, the result is not very satisfactory. There is plenty of what photographers refer to as "noise".

After downloading a trial version of Noise Ninja and making a rough and ready application of it to the photograph, much of the noise was removed. I suppose that if I applied the program more correctly, the results will be better. Below is what I got with minimum application of the program. I'll probably purchase it.
